Published Nov 16, 2022 · Updated Aug 13, 2026

We have a few settings on iOS for Betternet to help better secure your device and information. Please review each setting below.

To view your settings, click on the three lines in the upper-left corner of the app.

VPN Protocol

This is the default option when first installing Betternet. When this protocol is selected, we will pick the fastest and most secure protocol to connect to for your network or area.

Hydra

This unique protocol is developed by us and have been rated as one of the fastest VPN protocols. It is also the most secure of our protocols.

IKEv2 (IPSec)

While being less secure than our other protocols, this is one of our fastest protocols. While not on par with Hydra, it is still a reliable protocol that may help with certain technical issues.

WireGuard

WireGuard is our newest protocol. It has a strong balance between speed and security.

Kill Switch

If Betternet suddenly disconnects, enabling this feature will stop the data flow, protecting you by not allowing the internet traffic to run in the background once the VPN disconnects.

Auto-Protect

Activate auto-protect to automatically connect to betternet under specific cirumstances. It has 3 settings.

Always-On

This option tries to automatically reconnect to the VPN if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly. This is a Premium-only feature.

Unsecure Wi-Fi networks

With this option enabled, Betternet will automatically connect to our VPN servers whenever your iOS device connects to an unsecure Wi-Fi network.

Off

This option disables the Auto-Protect feature.

Split Tunneling

This tab allows you to fine-tune which websites should use the VPN on your computer. They are mutually exclusive, and both can't be toggled on at the same time.

Bypass VPN

Bypass VPN allow you to specify which website should bypass the VPN. Anything added to this list will use your normal ISP-provided IP address--even though everything else may be routed through the VPN.

Route via VPN

With this enabled, only the specific websites you list will go through the VPN connection. Do note that only the websites listed will go through the VPN, everything else will use your normal internet connection.

Push notifications

This controls which notifications the Betternet application sends you. It has two options.

Allow all notifications

With this option enabled, all Betternet notifications are allowed.

Unsecure WiFi alerts

With this enabled, you will get notified when you join an unsecure WiFi.
